Blog Design Preparations
Blog Design is about finding the right balance between a memorable and suitable visual language while emphasizing content and accounting for the uniqueness of every post.
Content is king and making it shine is your main priority. But you also need to carefully consider the design of elements which will help you achieve the goals you've set for your blog.
Setting the Tone & Mood
First, think about the content of the blog and how design can support and emphasize the topics you want to write about. Besides functional aspects like legible typography, good use of space and consistent colors, good design also adds a tonality and mood to your written word.
Think of your blog’s design as a speaker who reads out loud the content to your audience - with a very specific pronunciation, speed and rhythm.
At this stage, thinking about the visual appearance of your blog basically means to think of your blog as a brand. Here are a few questions you might ask yourself to get started:
- What are the topics your blog will cover?
- Is there a visual style which naturally comes along with those topics? Try to come up with at least 5 keywords.
- What feeling or message do you want your blog to convey to those who view it?
The point of this phase is to add some filters to your perception before jumping to the next stage: Gathering inspiration for your blog.
