Automatic Branch Management

Clean up stale and fully-merged branches in bulk. Keep your sidebar tidy without picking through it manually.

Automatic Branch Management
Why you'll want it

See Only the Branches That Matter.

Tower Basic shows you which branches are merged or stale. Tower Pro lets you act on that signal at scale — archiving dozens of branches in one go and automating the whole thing in the background.

Your Inactive Branches, Organized

Archived branches stay tucked away in their own section — invisible when you don't need them, right there when you do.

Archive Dozens of Branches at Once

One dialog. Every stale and merged branch in one place. Pick what to archive — or clear them all at once.

Fully Automated, Zero Manual Effort

Enable "Automatically Archive Branches" in the sidebar's settings and Tower silently archives merged and stale branches in the background. Your sidebar stays tidy without you lifting a finger.

No Branch Is Ever Truly Gone

Archived branches are fully functional — check them out, merge from them, or restore them with a right-click. Pin a branch or enable "Skip Auto-Archiving" to permanently protect it from the cleanup engine.

How it works

From Branch Graveyard to Clean Sidebar.

  1. 01

Tower Spots the Clutter for You

The total number of fully-merged or stale branches is displayed in the sidebar footer. Click it to open the "Archive Branches" dialog, where you can take action either individually or in bulk.

  2. 02

    Nothing Is Permanent

Archived branches live in a dedicated section below your main list. Right-click any of them and choose "Unarchive" to bring it back. Need to keep a branch in the main list? Enable "Skip Auto-Archiving" or pin it.

  3. 03

    Fine-Tune It Your Way

Use the sidebar's settings to view or hide the fully-merged and stale badges, define the stale branch time interval, and enable or disable the "Automatically Archive Branches" functionality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tower Basic include, and what requires Pro?
Tower Basic shows "Fully-Merged" and "Stale" badges in the sidebar and a hint view that offers a quick-delete option when you select a flagged branch. Tower Pro adds the dedicated "Archive Branches" dialog for bulk archiving, the "Archived Branches" section in the sidebar, drag-and-drop archiving, and the automatic background archiving engine.
What is the "Archive Branches" dialog?
The "Archive Branches" dialog is a Pro-exclusive view that opens when you click the notification badge in the sidebar footer. It lists every merged or stale branch Tower has detected, explains why each one qualifies, and lets you select individual branches or the entire list for archiving in one action.
What's the difference between archiving a branch and deleting it?
Deleting a branch removes it from your branch list entirely (commits remain reachable via the reflog). Archiving moves it to the "Archived Branches" section — hidden from your main sidebar but fully intact. You can check it out, merge from it, or restore it at any time. No history is touched.
How do I prevent a branch from being automatically archived?
Right-click any branch and enable "Skip Auto-Archiving." Branches you have pinned in the sidebar and branches configured as base branches in Tower Workflows are also automatically protected and will never be flagged or archived.
